The situation of Bangladeshi migrant workers in Saudi Arabia has remained troublesome for quite some years, because of issues in Saudi Arabia and irregularities in Bangladesh. It is high time that Bangladesh stepped up its diplomatic efforts to resolve the prickly migration issues with Saudi Arabia to ensure full bilateral protection for Bangladeshi workers, stopped sending workers there on visas obtained through ‘individual initiatives’ and ensured that visas for jobs are arranged within a government-to-government framework.
Bangladesh has sent 172,000 workers to Saudi Arabia in the past eight months, as Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training statistics show, and more than half a million in 2017 and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure protection for them all.
